Cultural Crossroads: A Personal Review of ‘The Brothers Sun’

Just finished  ‘The Brothers Sun’ on Netflix.

I was kind of hesitant to start, thinking it might represent the same old Asian stereotypes we have seen a thousand times. To my surprise, it turned out to be a refreshing blend of Chinese tradition and Western influences, both entertaining and enlightening. The martial arts scenes were a mix of originality, tension, and occasional humour.

I found a deep connection with both characters, Bruce and Charles, resonating more with Bruce as a second-generation Chinese German. His struggle to navigate both the Western and Chinese worlds, the gaps in his Mandarin (lol), and the challenge of pursuing unconventional hobbies in a traditional family—all hit close to home.

Charles, the older brother, echoed familial struggles despite being a first-generation Taiwanese, never having set foot in the West. His loyalty and selflessness resonated deeply, putting family needs before his own. In Western eyes, his extreme dedication might be misunderstood as lacking personal agency, but family always comes first for those familiar with Chinese values. Sacrificing dreams, constantly battling his desires against tradition—something many of us can relate to.

Michelle Yeoh’s portrayal of the mother was a standout—capturing the essence of a typical Chinese mother, conveying love through actions rather than words, and mastering the art of unspoken communication.

Growing up in Germany, surrounded by strong-willed individuals who question the importance of sharing every personal decision with family, I still find it challenging to carry the significance of Filial piety, a concept central to Chinese and East Asian cultures.

The series beautifully highlighted the clash between Chinese family-centric decisions and Western ideals of individuality and independence. ‘The Brothers Sun’ adeptly navigates these cultural complexities, making it relatable even for those unfamiliar with Chinese traditions. Highly recommended!
