Baby on Board: The Joys and Challenges of Cruising with an Infant

Written by:

Our baby boy was eight months old when my sister and I decided to go on a different kind of trip. It was a special occasion – my mom’s 60th birthday – and we wanted to make it memorable. So, we packed our bags and set sail on a 10-day cruise aboard the AIDA NOVA, visiting five incredible cities.

Since it was our first big trip with our little one, I felt quite overwhelmed. Additionally, the trip involved a lot of transportation–the car to the airport, a 4-hour flight to Tenerife, and a 1-hour bus ride to the cruise. Our boy had just started to crawl, becoming also more mobile day by day. I could not help but worry about how all these changes might affect our baby.

In hindsight, I realized that most of those fears were actually mine, not his. It is interesting how our stress and anxiety can sometimes project onto our children, affecting their behavior. On the flip side, when you are relaxed and happy, you naturally give your baby more love and care, reflecting their mood.

How can you make a cruise ship adventure with your little one as enjoyable and stress-free as possible? Let me share our experience with you:

The Joys of Cruising with a Baby:

  • Convenience at Sea: The cruise ship felt like a floating resort and offered something that we really appreciated—convenience. It was like being in a giant, luxurious hotel that travelled to multiple destinations. We didn’t have to worry about packing and unpacking every few days, which made all the difference with a baby in tow.
  • Dining Delights: Depending on your cruise company and package, many cruises offer all-inclusive options. What’s great is the freedom to dine in various restaurants, including some fancier ones. Plus, there are flexible dining options, so you can eat where and when you want, which was a lifesaver for sticking to our baby’s feeding and sleep schedule.
  • Entertainment for All Ages: Cruise ships are known for their wide range of entertainment options, ensuring that there’s never a boring moment for anyone in the family.
  • Safety is a Priority: Cruise ships are generally safe environments, providing peace of mind for parents. You can always keep a watchful eye on your little one throughout the entire journey.

The Challenges We Faced:

  • Age Limitation: Unfortunately, not all activities and shore excursions were suitable for our 8-month-old baby, so we chose to stay on board on those days.
  • Medical Considerations: While cruise ships have medical facilities, they may not be as well-equipped as land. Thankfully, our baby stayed healthy throughout the trip, but it’s wise to remember this when cruising with an infant.
  • Routine Adjustments: Traveling with a baby can disrupt their daily routine, including feeding and sleep schedules. We tried our best to stick to our baby’s schedule, but sometimes dinner was later than usual, or we returned to the ship past his bedtime. In those instances, we made up for it with longer walks and quality family time the next day.

More Tips for a Smooth Baby-Friendly Cruise

  • Choose the Right Cabin: Pick a cabin that suits your family’s needs. Look for options with enough space for a crib, ensuring your baby’s comfort during the cruise.
  • Check for Childcare Services: Find out if the cruise ship provides childcare services or an infant nursery. These services offer you some well-deserved breaks while ensuring your baby is safe and entertained.
  • Seek Baby-Friendly Amenities: Look for cruise lines that offer baby-friendly amenities like highchairs in dining areas, baby pools, and dedicated play areas for infants.
  • Consider the Cruise Itinerary: Review the cruise itinerary and the destinations. Make sure they are suitable for babies, offering family-friendly activities to enhance your cruise experience.

Ultimately, cruising with a baby can be an incredible adventure when you approach it with the right mindset. Choosing a route and cruise company that caters to your family’s needs and your little one’s comfort is crucial. With some flexibility and a willingness to adapt, you can create cherished memories and embark on exciting adventures with your baby beside you.
